Progressive production of a relative surplus­ populatioll or industrial reserve army As the composition of capital rises, the demand for labour-power falls relatively, since a larger part of capital goes to buy means of production , and less to employ workers. 'The labouring population therefore produces . . the means by which itself is made relatively superfluous, is turned into a relative surplus-population; and it does this to an always increasing extent' (p. 63 1). , This is a crucial step in Marx's argument, since it is the presence of the relative surplus-population that holds wages (the price of labour-power) down to the value of labour-power.

Here Marx is assuming that prices correspond to values. Chapter 20. Time-wages The determination of time-wages has already been explained. The hourly wage is the value of a day's labour-power divided by the number of hours in a normal working-day. A lengthening of the nor­ mal working-day therefore means a reduction of hourly wages, and so on. The actual price (wage) received may differ from the value of labour-power. Chapter 21. Piece-wages Wages are often paid by the piece produced instead of by the hour.

The development of machinery A machine 'supersedes the workman , who handles a single tool , by a mechanism operating with a number of similar tools, and set in motion by a single motive power' (p. 376) .
