They plan to have astronauts on the moon by the mid- to late 2020s. Astronauts are the brave pioneers of the 21st century. A career as an astronaut is very challenging but very exciting, too. Two Soviet women had already blazed the trail for female astronauts: Valentina Tereshkova in 1963, and Svetlana Savitskaya in 1982. Ride is dedicated to encouraging girls to study math and the sciences. Alan Shepard (1923–1998) was the first American man in space. His flight was an important one. Many Americans felt encouraged that the United States would be able to catch up with the Soviet Union’s space program.
