In the first days and weeks after my TBI, fatigue was an overwhelming problem. I wanted to sleep almost constantly, at the expense of any social or physical activities—even eating. I thought I knew what fatigue felt like after four years of medical school, three years of residency, and many years of being on call as a family physician.

Not enough to restore my energy balance. I seem to start the day with less energy, use it up more rapidly than in the past and have trouble refreshing it with a good night’s rest. When fatigued, everything we do seems to take more effort. We also make mistakes and get frustrated. Early on, my typical reaction to being tired during the day was to “gut it out” and try to finish the task I had scheduled. Not only would it take me much longer to do when I was tired, but the quality of my work suffered.

Memory retraining is labor intensive and not very effective over time. Trying harder to have a better memory is not a strategy that works, either.
