By Peter K. Jeffery (auth.), G. Cumming, G. Bonsignore (eds.)

This quantity documents the court cases on the 5th college of Thoracic medication held on the Ettore Majorana university of foreign medical tradition in March 1981. Foregathered there have been a heterogeneous team comprising clinicians, pathologists, ultra-microscopists, biochemists, immunologists, mobile biologists and physiologists they usually offered the twenty seven papers noticeable within the contents record. The dialogue which every one paper was once faithfully recorded (and the place priceless translated) and should be came across after each one author's presentation. This unfastened dialogue might be the main invaluable a part of the varsity of Thoracic drugs, and so much basically defines the current obstacles of data, and the instructions during which enquiry is being pursued. The collaboration of many of us made the creation of this ebook attainable - for the interpretation and the dialogue typescript omit Guiliana de Ferio, for the ultimate typing and format omit Corinne Wade ably assisted by way of pass over Karen Wadey and pass over Kim Lekstrom. The illustrations were handled the place worthwhile via Mr. John Griffiths and the construction of the e-book was once performed on the Midhurst clinical examine Institute ahead of its supply to Plenum Press. JEFFERY 26 DISCUSSION LECTURER: Jeffery CUMMING: What is unique about nerves, which produces reduction of silver salts to silver metal? JEFFERY: The rationale behind the silver staining is not well-known, but I presume that the reduction in silver is working through the same mechanism as the reduction of osmium tetroxide and in that case it is the unsaturated fatty lipids with their double bonds which reduces the silver.

Do you have any data on this at all? AYERS: There are two pieces of information which I can give you, firstly, Peter and I have been working with Lynne Reed using sulphur dioxide as the irritant. We found that Clara cells in response to this irritation showed metaplasia and changed into serous cells, into secretory cells and into goblet cells. The observation was that a sequence of events could be seen changing from Clara, to serous, to goblet. There is also work by Evans using nitrogen dioxide as the irritant and he has concluded from his observations using pulse labelling in the same way, giving a pulse at the beginning of the observation and watching the cell changes over 14 days, he came to the conclusion that the Clara cell increased its rate of division in response to the irritant and was the progenitor for other cell types within the bronchiolar epithelium.

This involves covering thin sections of appropriately processed tissue with silver halide emulsion which is sensitive to fJ particle emission. Silver halide crystals which have interacted with f3 particles can be reduced to silver grains after incubation in the dark for a suitable time, and subsequent development. These grains, localized over nuclei are easily visible and can be quantified microscopically (Fig. 6). Details of the applications and associated problems of this technique are available in Rogers (1979).
