Do you have any data on this at all? AYERS: There are two pieces of information which I can give you, firstly, Peter and I have been working with Lynne Reed using sulphur dioxide as the irritant. We found that Clara cells in response to this irritation showed metaplasia and changed into serous cells, into secretory cells and into goblet cells. The observation was that a sequence of events could be seen changing from Clara, to serous, to goblet. There is also work by Evans using nitrogen dioxide as the irritant and he has concluded from his observations using pulse labelling in the same way, giving a pulse at the beginning of the observation and watching the cell changes over 14 days, he came to the conclusion that the Clara cell increased its rate of division in response to the irritant and was the progenitor for other cell types within the bronchiolar epithelium.
