Although freshwater mussels are a good sign, concerns still persist about excessive erosion, which plays a factor in how governments approach river management. It also heavily influenced past thinking. One of the first projects I initiated when I arrived in Connecticut as a raw recruit from graduate school was to visit rivers and streams throughout New England to measure dimensions of pools. I knew it was a simple project, easy to get going and had the added benefit of exposing me to many local brooks and creeks.

They were almost prepared to take deep’s public transportation system from the trout version of a crowded inner city out to the suburbs of Connecticut. The outdoor pens were covered with an elaborate netting and fencing arrangement. We were informed that without netting, losses from birds could approach a hundred thousand fish a year. With a combined capacity for more than a half million fish outside alone, an efficient feeding system was a must for this part of the operation. Each tank got two automatic feeders.

When the crispiest of the upper crust arrived years later and found inns packed and streams crowded with city dwellers, they bought the establishments and surrounding lands for themselves and kicked everyone else out. The most affluent often organized themselves into exclusive clubs to rub elbows with those of a similarly high social status. Decades later, these clubs were canonized for protecting streams and the trout they contained, which is a claim that needs a bit more scrutiny. Motivated by the desire to save large catches for members, clubs bragged that they prevented overfishing and preserved watersheds with private ownership.
