This is a real problem for the males. Once the young cubs become yearlings they do not need to fear that they will be eaten by adult polar bears. The yearlings are too large and too smart to become a food source. They will try to eat food that belongs to older male bears. This makes the older bears angry. Many times the older bears will swipe the young bears with their paws or chase after them. Once the young bears discover that they are in trouble, they will cry for mother. Cubs are known as yearlings on their first birthday.
