Pluto status as a planet has been taken away. That is still not close enough for an impact though. 2010 RS80 – Another small object (10-35 meters across) passed just over 2 lunar distances from Earth on Sept. 9 UT. The explosion caused a massive shock wave that damaged hundreds of buildings and injured more than 1,000 people in the Chelyabinsk region. Comets are probably more unique because of their generally very eccentric orbits and as they near the sun they develop a more highly visible tail - which always points away from the sun.

Third, they are looking through an eyepiece. This comet was discovered on January 6, 1978, by Swiss astronomer Paul Wild (pronounced “vilt”). When it does so its speed is very high, and due to friction it lights up and evaporates quickly. Runaway stars are massive stars traveling rapidly through interstellar space. Hertzsprung, realized the relationship between a star's temperature (color) and its brightness, and designed a diagram illustrating this relationship in 1913, later called the Hertzsprung-Russell Diagram.

His attention to detail on information presented in the powerpoint is excellent, altjhough a couple of slides are a bit wordy for a powerpoint presentation. It is worth a read if you are looking for information on asteroids. Astronomers almost universally assert that the best descriptive model for the formation of the solar system is the solar nebula hypothesis. From tiny Mercury to distant Neptune and Pluto, The Planets profiles each of the Solar System's members in depth, featuring the latest imagery from space missions.

The Sun and Our Shadows – This short interactive activity helps students understand how the position of the sun in the sky effects how our shadows look. You'll find lots of other links to resources about impact events on my catastrophism page. Atiras, Atens, Apollos and Amors are subgroups of Near-Earth asteroids, and are categorized by their orbits. Scientist so far have discovered about 4,000 comets,, and evidence suggests there may be hundreds of millions more -- perhaps trillions."

Space.com has a ton of up to date information about what is going on in the sky. To conclude we would like to share some information concerning the possible meaning behind this intriguing formation, that is very Native American looking in its design. Generally speaking, a comet is a frozen ball (of water, carbon dioxide, ammonia and other organic carbon compound ices) hurtling through space. Similar to 2010 RX30, 2010 RF12 was also found at 19th magnitude on the night of Sept 5 UT by Andrea Boattini from Mount Lemmon.

Could u imagine when an asteroid hit Earth ??? L., Rettig, T., Brittain, S., Haywood, R., Simon, T., Kulesa, C. 2004. Asteroids are small heavenly bodies, which move around the sun like the planets. The appearance of the comets will get our attention, but by then it would be too late to take effective action. LAT - Large Amateur Telescope (Group70) - This volunteer group is building a major telescope using a "mirror blank, found at the University of Tasmania, Australia".

Image from the SOHO satellite showing two comets near the Sun. All month long it will be retrograding on the border of Sagittarius and Ophiuchus. The unpredictability of the Leonids illustrates how difficult it is to anticipate exactly where anything in space will be at any time in the future. Dust may have been blown into the stratosphere, where it would have been transported around the globe easily, so it may be possible to trace the event in ice cores from Greenland or Antarctica.

Occasionally, collisions and gravitational close encounters can push asteroids out of the asteroid belt and send them careening inward towards the Sun. Although it probably originally had a very long and elliptical orbit taking about 43 years for a round trip, in 1974 it had passed within about 625,000 miles of Jupiter. Some meteorites are almost entirely made up of iron and nickel. None of the space probes to have ventured through the asteroid belt so far have suffered an accident, and the asteroids appear to be far enough apart to make the chances of a crash quite small.

You can also see future dates and locations for the most prominent asteroids, like 500-km-wide Vesta, at http://www.nakedeyeplanets.com/vesta-2011.htm Every August 12, the annual Perseid Meteor Shower – the “Ol’ Faithful” of meteor showers – takes place. That is reckoned to have thrown up so much dust into the atmosphere that it cooled the planet abruptly, making it much harder for the cold-blooded dinosaurs to survive, and giving warm-blooded animals including mammals the evolutionary edge.

Left over from the formation of the solar system, they are formed from different combinations of clay, rock, nickel and iron. The rest come from asteroids, and a TINY fraction can come from the moon or Mars. Eratosthenes made numerous contributions to the sciences and arts in many fields, including geography, mathematics, astronomy, chronography (calendars), music, and literature. This comet has the potential of destroying the human species. And like the Eta Aquarids, the brightest of family tend to leave long-lasting trains.
