Both their internal and external tissues are bathed in an aqueous environment and exchange fluids by diffusion on both sides (figure b). Altering their skin coloration aids in camouflage and can help thermoregulation of body temperature. Ridley hatchlings have even been found in the stomachs of leatherback turtles. Amphibians - with a few exceptions - live part of their life in water and part on land. Early amphibians were a crucial link from fish to terrestrial reptiles. Difficult to see as they climb through the foliage with sticky toe-pads, but commonly heard are the arboreal treefrogs, such as the Green Treefrog (shown left).

Playa Nancite: Located in Santa Rosa National Park, Nancite--which is off-limits to anyone but scientists--is the second major site for arribadas. These fossils chronicle the change from the land-dwelling mesonychids, which are the likely ancestors of whales, through animals such as Ambulocetus, which was still a tetrapod but which also has such whale-like features as an ear capsule isolated from the rest of its skull, to the primitive whales called the Archaeocetes.
In general, reptiles are lung-breathing vertebrates with two pairs of limbs and a horny, scaly skin. The juveniles are more boldly marked than the adults, and are sometimes incorrectly identified as copperheads, though copperheads do not occur in our area.
